Nigeria to Receive Breakthrough HIV Prevention Drug in March
Nigeria is set to receive consignments of a groundbreaking HIV prevention medicine in March 2026, marking a significant step forward in the country’s fight against HIV and strengthening public health interventions across the region.
The Federal Government announced that the country will soon introduce lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable medication designed to prevent HIV infection. The drug will be incorporated into Nigeria’s pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) programme, which aims to protect individuals who are at high risk of contracting HIV.
According to the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), preparations are already underway to ensure the successful rollout of the treatment nationwide. The initiative forms part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to strengthen HIV prevention and accelerate progress toward ending the epidemic.
A New Generation of HIV Prevention
Lenacapavir represents a major innovation in HIV prevention because it is administered twice a year as an injection, offering a more convenient alternative to daily oral prevention drugs.
Clinical trials have shown exceptionally strong results, demonstrating near-total protection against HIV infection when administered correctly.
The introduction of long-acting prevention medicines is widely seen as a game-changer for public health systems in Africa, where adherence to daily medication can sometimes present challenges.
Strengthening Nigeria’s HIV Response
Nigeria continues to carry one of the largest HIV burdens in the world, with approximately 1.9 million people living with HIV and a national prevalence rate of around 1.3% among adults aged 15–49.
To support the rollout of the new prevention therapy, readiness assessments have already been completed across multiple states including Lagos, Kano, Kwara, Benue, Anambra, Cross River, Ebonyi, Gombe, Akwa Ibom, and the Federal Capital Territory.
These preparations include regulatory approval, training for healthcare professionals, and the development of awareness materials to ensure that the medication can be deployed safely and effectively.
Innovation Driving Africa’s Pharmaceutical Market
Developments such as the introduction of new HIV prevention treatments highlight the rapid evolution of the pharmaceutical sector across Africa. Governments, regulators, manufacturers, and distributors are increasingly collaborating to improve access to innovative medicines and strengthen healthcare systems across the continent.
As demand for high-quality medicines, healthcare technologies, and pharmaceutical distribution continues to grow, industry platforms such as Pharma West Africa play an important role in connecting stakeholders across the regional healthcare ecosystem.
Taking place 14–16 April 2026 at the Landmark Centre in Lagos, Pharma West Africa brings together pharmaceutical manufacturers, distributors, regulators, and healthcare professionals to explore new technologies, discuss regulatory developments, and strengthen supply chains across West Africa’s rapidly growing pharmaceutical market.
